Private yoga sessions with Emma

Private sessions offer intimacy as they are tailored to your body and your needs.  The sessions are hands on, Emma gives Reiki where she can. There is no set structure and we will generally only focus on a couple of postures. Thus it is a not a class where you might establish a set routine to copy at home, it is more so a therapeutic approach to practice, where we can seek to establish new movement patterns which you can start to integrate into your yoga practice and in daily life. Please bring a notebook if you wish to record what we are practising as I do not provide notes following the class.

Emma’s teachings have been influenced by various teachers and traditions, most notably the teachings of Desikachar and the Scaravelli-inspired approach to practice, with its focus on freeing the spine and the mind, working with the body, not against it, creating greater stillness so that purusha - the transcendental self or pure consciousness - may reveal more of itself.

Private sessions can be taken for 30 minutes (£40), 45 minutes (£60) or an hour (£80). Hour sessions can be booked by clicking the button, otherwise please email Emma at emma@beinspiredby.co.uk

Private Yoga Sutras lesson

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, widely regarded as the authoritative text on yoga, is a collection of aphorisms outlining the eight limbs of yoga.

These ‘threads’ (as ‘sutra’ translates from Sanskrit) of wisdom offer guidelines for living a meaningful and purposeful life. The true purpose of Patanjali’s work is to reduce and resolve suffering, as well as the opportunity to realise our true and highest potential

You will explore with Emma, the first two/three chapters of the Yoga Sutras, discussing various sutras and considering how they might be relevant to your life and whether you can use the insight gained to support your life and anything you are navigating at that time.

While Emma certainly doesn’t claim to be a yoga philosophy teacher, she knows from her own experience how helpful it can be to discuss the philosophical underpinning to yoga, almost like a form of talking therapy, but one that can be embodied, promoting greater consciousness and awareness of Self in the process.

Yoga Sutras group sessions

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali was the first text written solely on the theory and practice of yoga, complied circa 2,000+ years ago the sage Patanjali in India, who codified and organised the knowledge and wisdom of yoga from much older traditions.

This text is as relevant now as it was then and the study and embodiment of the Yoga Sutras can provide much comfort and support in navigating the problems and challenges that we face today and in understanding more about yoga and the working of our mind especially.

Emma has studied the Sutras a number of times now and whilst she certainly isn’t an expert, she enjoys sharing what she has learned with others so that they may also benefit – there is great wisdom in this text and it can really help to provide some grounding to our spiritual practice and help us to better navigate our lives.

The sessions will be friendly and informal, encouraging discussion and interaction as a means to understand the teachings. These sessions are open to everyone, regardless of your level of knowledge of the Sutras or experience of yoga. Ideal for those who wish to deepen their yoga practice and move it beyond the asana.

Vedic Chanting group sessions

Emma was introduced to Vedic chanting many years ago and started studying it regularly with her teacher, Helen Macpherson, seven years ago now. Vedic chanting is a powerful option for those who wish to take their yoga practice beyond the asana.

We carry all sorts of wounds from our childhood around being seen and heard and many have taken on a false belief that they can’t sing and therefore can’t chant. This is not true and perhaps now is the time to change that story!

The vibratory effect of chanting the various ancient Vedic texts really does have a positive effect on our energy body and this is the reason Vedic chanting is used in yoga therapy - the very act of chanting Sanskrit positively changes things.

For example, we might chant mantras to help remove illness, for ongoing health and vitality, to strengthen faith, to overcome those dark moments, to celebrate the sun and the moon, to encourage peace, to invoke the energy of say Ganesha (the God of removing obstacles) and Shiva (the destroyer) and to encourage more light generally.

Not only has chanting helped Emma to find her voice (having written four books since she started), but it has also given her greater confidence in using her voice, not least in expressing her needs and being honest with herself and others, but in opening to greater levels of healing, authenticity and self acceptance, all of which has been empowering.

Other benefits include greater inner peace, calmness and contentment, improved breathing capacity, memory support and mental discipline, improved focus, listening and communication skills as well as reducing mental and emotional agitation.

Pranayama and meditation group sessions

Emma has significantly benefitted over the last twenty years from pranayama and meditation as imparted by various teachers, and would like to share this practice with you so that you may also benefit.

She wishes to honour the tradition of the teaching, where students sit with the teacher in person, and are alert to the teachings, so there is a commitment to each session from both parties.

In the sessions, Emma will touch briefly on the roots of pranayama and will explain a little about each breathing technique. Essentially though, besides moving and activating the energy within our bodies, pranayama provides an opportunity for focusing awareness and is said to be the bridge between the physical practices and the workings of the mind.

The physical benefits may include decreasing stress levels, improving quality of sleep, increasing mindfulness, supporting healthy digestion and elimination, lowering blood pressure, improving lung function and supporting nervous function.

However, pranayama becomes a tool towards meditation and increasing levels of stillness.
